Weekly Update February 13, 2020

Hi San Tan Families,
NO SCHOOL ON MONDAY, FEBRUARY 17 FOR PRESIDENTS’ DAY
This week we went to the library after a long period of missing it. Most children will bring home a book or two. Books can be returned in two weeks when we revisit the library.
We turned our study from animal classification to Arizona facts and symbols. Children made small books of Arizona facts and watched videos about our state. Ask your child to explain the five Cs of Arizona.
Students are regrouping new tens from ones in math. We are using manipulative base 10 blocks and drawings.
We continue to read at various levels in small groups every day. This week we answered comprehension questions about insects and butterflies. We worked on capitalizing names of people and pets, adding inflectional endings, and -ir words. Check out the children’s Insect writing in the hall. They are really good at stating facts in complete sentences of their own creation. I hope you enjoyed the valentine letters they wrote for you.
We got crafty as we decorated Valentine bags for our centers on Friday, and created love bugs.
Thanks for taking time to help you child practice spelling words and sight words. This week’s spelling words are -ur words: turn, hurt, curl, surf, turtle, Bonus Words – turkey, nurse, purple, slurp, burger.
Our field trip to the Mesa Arts Center is on Tuesday, February 18th. If your child is not attending, kindly email me and let me know if she/he will need to be placed in another classroom that day or if you are keeping your child home. Chaperones should be at school at 11:00 to check in at the office. We will board the bus at 11:15 and leave by 11:30. After the play we will tour the set and return to school by 3:00 dismissal. I will send a separate email to families with children who are not attending the field trip and families who are chaperoning.
Many of the children participated in gifted testing this week. Most are finished, but a few will continue testing in a small group next week.
